ORACLE: CONNECTED CONFIDENCE

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

A compact, chest worn camera designed as an extension of a body worn computer, capturing and transmitting critical data in real time while remaining adaptable, non intimidating, and trusted in the field..

PROJECT TYPE

PRODUCT DESIGN

The Oracle Law Enforcement Body Camera began as a beta project aimed at rethinking how information is captured, shared, and used in the field. At the time, body cameras largely functioned as passive recording devices, collecting footage that was manually uploaded after a shift into fragmented, agency specific systems. Officers were still handwriting notes, backing up files to hard drives, and working without access to real time information. Oracle saw an opportunity to shift enforcement from delayed documentation to “knowledge now,” enabling better decisions in the moment while improving long term accountability and record accuracy.

From a design standpoint, the challenge quickly revealed itself as far more than a camera. Every officer, kit, uniform, and deployment context is different, requiring a solution that could adapt across bodies, roles, and environments without becoming intimidating or intrusive. As requirements expanded to include battery life, 5G connectivity, communications, storage, antennas, and modular mounting, the product evolved into a body worn computer system. The architecture was ultimately split into a phone based computing core with holsters and a chest worn camera component. By enabling data to upload to the cloud when bandwidth allowed and be accessed immediately, the system pointed toward a future of greater transparency, better information flow, and more measured, informed enforcement on both sides of the uniform.

BUILDING SPACE FOR ITERATIVE TESTS & REFINEMENT ~

Great products are not proven in studios or conference rooms. They are proven in the environments they are meant to live in. In-field testing validates design decisions under real conditions, where distractions, fatigue, weather, motion, and time pressure shape how products are actually used. This is where assumptions break down and meaningful insight begins. Field testing reveals what controlled environments cannot. Grip changes with cold hands, interfaces behave differently when attention is divided, and small details around access, storage, and orientation suddenly matter a great deal. These realities are rarely uncovered through interviews or lab testing alone. They are discovered by observing real people using real products in real situations. Adoption is shaped by these moments. Products fail not because users lack understanding, but because friction quietly erodes confidence. In-field testing exposes where effort is too high, where complexity causes hesitation, and where simplicity builds trust. It helps teams design products that fit naturally into routines rather than demanding behavior change. Ultimately, brand credibility is earned through performance. A single failure in the field can outweigh years of marketing, while consistent reliability builds loyalty without explanation. In-field testing aligns product behavior with brand promise, reduces risk, and ensures the work holds up when it matters most.
